Mandi: Scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi have developed a Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) that provides daily forecasts for the entire Indian Himalayan Region, said a statement from the institute on Wednesday.Developed by a team led by Prof Derricks Praise Shukla of IIT Mandi’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the web-based system combines terrain susceptibility with real-time satellite rainfall data to identify areas at high risk of landslides and issue advance warnings during the monsoon, said the statement.“With the onset of the monsoon, our system provides daily forecasts, helping authorities and local communities identify high-risk areas and take timely measures such as evacuation and disaster preparedness,” Prof Shukla said in the statement..According to IIT Mandi, the system is among the country’s most comprehensive landslide forecasting platforms as it covers the entire Indian Himalayan Region. Researchers analysed nearly 26,000 landslide events from the Geological Survey of India database to prepare a susceptibility map.The forecasts are available through a Google Earth Engine-based web portal, allowing users to access daily risk maps, download PDF bulletins and receive location-specific alerts, added the statement.
