SILCHAR: A 22-year-old man was nabbed by locals and handed over to police on Wednesday for allegedly raping and murdering an eightyear-old girl in Assam’s Sribhumi district.The girl, a minor, had been missing since 10am on Wednesday. After a search, her family found her body in a forested area near a hillock close to their home.Residents identified the suspect, tracked him down and handed him to authorities.The girl’s family has lodged an FIR alleging rape and murder. However, police said the autopsy was awaited to confirm rape.Locals alleged police did not arrive on time to secure the crime scene after the family reported the discovery, despite a police outpost being about 300 metres from the location.By evening, hundreds of residents blocked a local road. Mohan Lal Das, officer in-charge of Madan Mohan police outpost, was sent to police lines pending an inquiry into alleged dereliction of duty.The road blockade was lifted after assurances and administrative action.
