Guwahati: Assam Police have filed chargesheets in just over half of the nearly 10 lakh criminal cases registered since BJP formed its first govt in the state in 2016, according to official data tabled in the assembly by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.In a written reply to a question by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, the CM, who also holds the home portfolio, stated that 9,68,938 cases of various categories were registered across police stations in the state between 2016 and 2026. According to Sarma’s written reply, of these, 5,20,782 cases, or around 54%, have resulted in chargesheets.The assembly was also informed that crimes against women accounted for a significant share of the registered cases during the period.Responding to a separate query by Congress MLA Baby Begum, Sarma said 2,04,134 cases of crimes against women were registered over the last 10 years. The data showed that these included 2,961 murder cases involving women and 15,397 rape cases. Chargesheets have been filed in 1,33,675 cases involving crimes against women.The govt also provided crime and investigation figures for the period since Sarma assumed office as CM in May 2021. In response to a question by Congress MLA Nurul Islam, Sarma said 3,78,483 FIRs were registered in the past five years, while police had filed 2,54,538 chargesheets.During the same period, 4,26,502 accused were arrested in connection with these cases. Of them, 29,164 have been punished under the law, indicating that convictions have been secured in a fraction of the total arrests made.
