Thiruvananthapuram: A day after watching her 3-year-old daughter being crushed to death by a runaway tempo traveller, the grieving mother allegedly attempted suicide at her house in Kattakada on Monday.Nisha, mother of Rithu Veda, was found hanging inside the bathroom of her house at Perayam, Kuttiyanikkad, around 12.30 pm. Family members, who noticed the incident in time, broke open the door, rescued her and rushed her to a private hospital at Kattakada. After receiving treatment, she was discharged and brought back home. Rithu Veda’s funeral was held later in the evening.Relatives said Nisha wasstruggling to come to terms with the traumatic death of her only child. She helplessly watched the tempo traveller roll over the toddler in front of her eyes and reportedly collapsed after seeing the child lying in a pool of blood. She was admitted to hospital following the incident and was discharged on Monday morning, hours before the suicide attempt.Rithu Veda, daughter of Anu Prasad and Nisha, was killed on Sunday during a family outing to the Kumbichal Kadavu bridge at Amburi. Around three families travelled together in a tempo traveller driven by Prasad.After parking the vehicle near the bridge, the family members got down to spend time at the tourist spot. Police said the parked vehicle suddenly rolled forward, allegedly after the handbrake failed or was released. As the adults tried to move away, the toddler came in front of the vehicle and was run over.She was rushed to Neyyar Medicity Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The body was later shifted to Govt Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, for postmortem examination and was handed over to the family on Monday. Police said the preliminary assessment suggests the handbrake cable may have snapped. A detailed mechanical inspection and further investigation are under way.Neyyar Dam police registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances under which the parked vehicle moved. They are examining whether the handbrake wasproperly engaged and if any mechanical fault contributed to the accident. Further investigation is under way.
