Kanpur: District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Thursday appointed legal guardians for 12 persons with disabilities who are above 18 years of age but are unable to take decisions regarding their lives due to autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities or multiple disabilities. The appointments were made during a meeting of the district-level committee held at the Collectorate. Officials said the initiative would help ensure proper care, protection and legal support for persons with special needs who are unable to independently manage their personal and social affairs. The DM said that before giving the legal guardianship is not merely a formal procedure and that the administration conducts a thorough verification process before appointing a guardian.A designated team visits the applicant’s home to ensure that the proposed guardian has no vested personal interest and is genuinely committed to the welfare and care of the person with a disability. The legal guardianship certificate is issued only after a detailed inquiry and a hearing by the district-level Local Level Committee. He explained that once appointed, a guardian is authorised to take decisions regarding treatment, care, banking, property and other essential matters in the best interest of the person with a disability. ………….
