Ahmedabad: Three dilapidated spans of Subhash Bridge were brought down in a controlled operation on Wednesday. No untoward incident was reported during the entire operation, officials said, adding that the contractor carried out the demolition under the supervision of experts. Prescribed safety standards and protocols were followed along with continuous monitoring, they said. The area around the bridge was barricaded and declared a restricted zone. Workers have begun removing debris from the site. The next phase of the demolition will also follow all safety protocols.
The bridge developed cracks in its span
The 453.8m long and 12.9m wide Subhash Bridge was built by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 1973. It was urgently closed to traffic on Dec 4, 2025, after cracks were reported. The bridge’s foundation and the superstructure were inspected in consultation with experts from IIT Roorkee, IIT Bombay and SVNIT. It was then decided to demolish the entire bridge.Since the bridge closed, traffic congestion has worsened at the RTO Circle, the eastern Riverfront Road and Vadaj Circle.
