Indore: Even as the admission process for undergraduate professional courses gathers pace, colleges affiliated with Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) have renewed their demand for the restoration of the semester system in BBA and BCA programmes.
College representatives have written to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), urging it to direct the Madhya Pradesh higher education department to replace the existing annual examination pattern with the semester-based curriculum. While the other courses under the university’s purview are running under semester system, only BBA and BCA programmes are following annual exam system.
The demand comes amid concerns that the annual system has adversely affected both teaching and student interest in these professional courses. College authorities argue that requiring students to study 12 subjects in a single academic year places excessive academic pressure on them while leaving limited scope for continuous evaluation and practical skill development.
Around 70 DAVV-affiliated colleges in Indore offer BBA, while more than 30 institutions conduct BCA programmes. Despite being professional courses, both continue to follow the annual examination pattern, unlike MBA and MCA, which are conducted on a semester basis.
Association of Private College Principals president Saurabh Parikh and treasurer Anas Iqbal said a majority of colleges favour the semester system. They contend that AICTE has already prepared a semester-based curriculum for these programmes, which should be implemented in line with the National Education Policy. They believe the change would improve academic assessment, promote skill-oriented learning and enhance the overall quality of education.
The directorate of technical education (DTE) has declared the first-round allotment for undergraduate counselling. The cutoff for BCA touched nearly 65 percent at leading colleges, while BBA admissions in several institutions closed at around 60 percent. Candidates allotted seats must report to their respective colleges by July 2 to confirm admission, failing which their allotments will be cancelled. The second round of counselling for the remaining seats will begin on July 3.
The DTE is also conducting counselling for MBA and MCA admissions. Registration will remain open until July 1, while choice filling and locking can be completed until July 5. The first round of seat allotment, based on CMAT scores, is scheduled for July 10.
