Nagpur: Senior IPS officer Vishwas Nangre Patil, who assumed charge as Nagpur commissioner of police on Monday, emphasised people-centric policing, with top priority accorded to safety of women and weaker sections of society. A detailed blueprint has already been issued on how police should serve the public, he said.Addressing the media after taking over the reins from outgoing CP Ravinder Singal, Nangre Patil announced that Operation Thunder launched against drugs during the tenure of his predecessor will continue with full force. “Keeping youths and students away from the drug menace is a shared responsibility of society and police,” he stressed. He called for public cooperation and said every citizen is a policeman without a uniform. Curbing cybercrime is another major focus area of the new CP.On his new role, Nangre Patil said CM Devendra Fadnavis and Director General of Police Sadanand Date have placed significant expectations on him. He said the force will follow SMART policing as envisioned by PM Modi for a modern, accountable and techno-savvy approach to law and order.Emphasising women’s safety, he said the city’s daughters and mothers should feel completely secure, noting that the use of hidden cameras by personnel in plain clothes has already contributed to reducing crimes against women. The CP also shared that he personally favours policing at night. With 30 years of experience, the commissioner said local demography and topography, along with crime pattern, would be studied before framing specific strategies. “I will carry out SWOT analysis as directed by DGP Maharashtra before planning initial moves,” he said.Describing police personnel as family members, he said any attack on them would be treated as an attack on him. He also expressed willingness to participate in constructive social and cultural programmes aimed at guiding youth, women and senior citizens.
