Kanpur: The family of freedom fighter and former Congress MLA Hanuman Prasad Kuril has accused a builder of illegally occupying part of their ancestral property, demanding Rs 2 crore in extortion, and issuing death threats. Acting on the Police Commissioner’s directions, Colonelganj police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the allegations.Nisha Kuril, a resident of Benajhabar and granddaughter of Hanuman Prasad Kuril, said her grandfather, a former MLA from the Bilhaur assembly constituency, had purchased a 452-square-yard property during his lifetime. According to the complaint, the family entered into an agreement in 2021 to sell the property to Akhilesh Chandra Porwal for Rs 4.10 crore due to financial difficulties. However, they alleged that they had received only Rs 37.72 lakh so far. They further claimed that Rs 13 lakh was later returned to the builder on the pretext of clearing pending taxes. The family alleged that the builder subsequently took illegal possession of a portion of the house and one shop. On June 16, he allegedly attempted to forcibly occupy another shop. When family members resisted, they were allegedly abused, subjected to caste-based remarks, and threatened with dire consequences unless they transferred the property in his name or paid Rs 2 crore. The complaint also alleged that the family received death threats after refusing to comply with the demands. They claimed the entire incident was captured on CCTV but alleged that Colonelganj police initially failed to take appropriate action and behaved disrespectfully with them.DCP (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava said an FIR had been registered on the directions of the Police Commissioner. “An impartial investigation into the matter is underway, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.
