Kanpur: Eight people were injured after a drunk driver lost control of an SUV and rammed into a loader and several two-wheelers in the Gandhinagar area under Sisamau police station limits on Sunday evening. The impact of the collision was so severe that the SUV’s airbags deployed. Police have registered an FIR and are investigating the incident.According to eyewitnesses, the Fortuner was speeding and swerving on the Gopal Talkies-Chamanganj road when it reached near a dharamshala in Gandhinagar and collided head-on with a loader coming from the opposite direction. The SUV then hit several two-wheelers, including a motorcycle, a Bullet and a scooty.Eight people, including loader driver RK Verma, his assistant Sujit Kumar, Aftab of Chamanganj, Guddu Rajput of Lenin Park and Saurabh Nigam of Prem Nagar, sustained injuries. All the injured were rushed to a hospital by the police.Several motorcycles and scooters were damaged in the accident, including a Bullet motorcycle belonging to a police personnel.The incident triggered chaos at the spot as locals surrounded the driver and protested. They alleged that the driver was heavily intoxicated and that the Fortuner belonged to a politician. Police said the allegations were being verified as part of the investigation.According to the official handle of the Kanpur Commissionerate Police, an FIR has been registered at Sisamau police station on the basis of a written complaint, and further legal proceedings are underway.
