Chamba: In a likely first for Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district since the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, came into force, police have registered an FIR against a man for allegedly practising instant triple talaq and evicting his wife. The complainant, Emna of Paliur village, accused her husband, Rustam, of pronouncing “talaq” three times in front of two witnesses before forcing her out of their home. Superintendent of police Vijay Kumar Saklani said Emna had alleged prolonged physical and mental harassment by Rustam and her mother-in-law, Manira, claiming the two repeatedly assaulted her and threatened her life. Police registered a case against Rustam under section 4 of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, and sections 85, 351(2), and 352 of BNS. A separate FIR was filed against the mother-in-law for cruelty and harassment. Instant triple talaq, or Talaq-e-Biddat, allows a marriage to be dissolved by uttering the word three times in one sitting. The practice is illegal and unconstitutional. No arrests have been made so far.
