Berhampur: A 40-year-old labourer was run over by a sand-laden truck at Digapahandi in Ganjam district on Monday.The accident led to a protest by locals who blocked the road by putting the body on the stretch for hours, disrupting communication from Berhampur to Mohana in Gajapati district. The protesters demanded adequate compensation for the victim’s family and installation of speed-breakers in the area.The deceased was identified as Chandan Sahu of Digapahandi. He was returning home with his four-year-old son after buying a few items when he fell on the ground while trying to avoid bumping into a motorcyclist coming from the opposite direction and the truck crushed him to death.Locals rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.Tehsildar Sarat Chandra Sahu and the police rushed to the protest site and assured the locals of providing monetary help to the family. After conducting an autopsy, the body was handed over to the family.Police said they have already seized the truck and motorcycle from the spot. The driver of the truck, however, managed to flee. Police are searching to nab the accused.
