Sonipat: A 26-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death in the Sonipat district in a case that has exposed conflicting claims over the motive behind the murder. While the victim’s family has alleged that the killing was driven by suspicions of an illicit relationship with a neighbour’s wife, they have also claimed that a Rs 40,000 financial dispute may have played a crucial role. Police say both angles are under investigation. The deceased, identified as Vishal, was employed as a plant operator at a private company in Rai Industrial Area and hailed from Khandawali village in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district. According to the complaint filed by Vishal’s father, Shiv Kumar, neighbour Ombeer suspected that Vishal was involved in an extramarital relationship with his wife. The complaint alleges that Ombeer’s son, Anuj, also harboured resentment towards Vishal over the suspected affair. Shiv Kumar claimed that on the night of the incident, he received a phone call from Anuj. He alleged that he could hear Vishal screaming in the background. When he asked to speak to his son, the caller allegedly responded, “We have finished Vishal. Come and take him away.”The family has alleged that Vishal was abducted, taken to an isolated location, and brutally assaulted with sticks until he succumbed to his injuries.Apart from the alleged affair, Shiv Kumar claimed that Ombeer had borrowed Rs 40,000 from Vishal. According to the family, tensions escalated after Vishal demanded the money back, making the financial dispute another possible motive behind the murder. Vishal’s brother, Atul, has questioned the alleged affair narrative, insisting that the murder was primarily linked to the monetary dispute. He said Vishal had initially lived with him in a rented accommodation after moving to Rai for work, but later shifted to another nearby house following a personal disagreement. Despite living separately, the brothers remained in regular contact. Atul alleged that the accused deliberately introduced the affair angle to divert attention from the financial dispute and avoid repaying the borrowed money. He further claimed that Vishal was returning home after finishing his work shift on the night of the incident when he was intercepted near Jathedi village. According to the family, he was forcibly taken to a secluded spot, where he was subjected to prolonged assault throughout the night and beaten until he died.Rai police station SHO Inspector Yashbir Dhillon said a forensic team visited the crime scene and collected evidence. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a murder case based on Shiv Kumar’s complaint. The SHO said no arrests had been made so far and that investigators are examining every possible angle, including the alleged relationship and the financial dispute.Officials maintained that the exact motive behind the killing has not yet been established.
