Agartala: Two alleged family killings reported in separate parts of Tripura over the past 24 hours have heightened concern over alcohol abuse and domestic violence.In the first incident, a 34-year-old man has been accused of killing his two minor children at the Bru Settlement in Ultachhara ADC Village under Gandacherra subdivision in Dhalai districton Saturday, police said.According to the police statement, Lalchuanawma Bru was intoxicated and became violent. His wife, Rontarung Reang, fled with one child, fearing for their safety. The two children who stayed behind, 13-year-old Rishika Khakhomati Reang and four-year-old Prishammaiha Molsai Reang, were allegedly beaten to death with a wooden stick.When local residents found the bodies, they detained the accused and alerted Gandacherra police. Police arrested him and sent the bodies to Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examinations, the statement said. The children’s mother filed a complaint, after which a case was registered. The accused remains in custody and the investigation is on.In a second incident, a man was fatally assaulted by his son at North Rangamura under the Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district. Police identified the victim as Ayakhi Ray Tripura and his son as Samir Tripura, police said.Preliminary investigations reveal that Samir had a history of narcotic substance abuse and was frequently involved in altercations with his father. During an argument on Saturday, he allegedly attacked his father with a wooden stick, causing fatal injuries. Samir was later arrested, the statement said.Commentators said the incidents highlight the need for robust de-addiction programmes, accessible mental health services, community intervention, and family counselling, particularly for economically vulnerable and marginalised groups.
