Silchar: A suspected drug peddler was arrested with 12,000 Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 90 lakh during a routine naka check in the Ramkrishna Nagar area of Assam’s Sribhumi district on Friday night, police said.The accused was identified as 32-year-old Sarimul Haque, a resident of Muliala village in Ratabari. Police said he was intercepted while travelling in a car from Ishancherra towards Anipur.Police recovered 60 packets containing 12,000 Yaba tablets weighing a total of 1,552 grams from the vehicle. Officials said the seized contraband has an estimated black market value of around Rs 90 lakh.The operation was led by Ramkrishna Nagar co-district SDPO Angshul Sarma along with officer-in charge Priyabrat Sharma and personnel of the intelligence branch.A case has been registered against Haque under the NDPS Act. He was produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court on Saturday, and further investigation is under way.The seizure comes amid continued anti-narcotics drives across Assam, where police have intensified operations against drug trafficking under the state’s zero-tolerance policy. Despite frequent seizures and arrests, concerns remain over the persistent flow of narcotics and the growing impact of drug abuse on the youth.
