Jamshedpur: Tata Steel has developed green concrete by using manufactured sand produced from LD (Linz-Donawitz) slag, a byproduct generated during the steelmaking process, the company said in a statement. The utilisation of LD slag has long posed a challenge for steel manufacturers. To address the issue, Tata Steel’s Industrial By-Products Management Division (IBMD) developed M-sand from LD slag for value-added applications.A cross-functional team from Tata Steel and Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd assessed the suitability of LD slag-based M-sand for concrete production. The team successfully developed concrete mix designs for M15, M20 and M25 grades in compliance with IS 10262 and IS 456 standards, meeting all key performance parameters, the company said in a release issued on Friday. The newly developed concrete incorporates nearly 1 tonne of LD slag-based M-sand per cubic metre, enabling the productive use of industrial byproducts while substantially lowering the carbon footprint compared with conventional concrete.According to the company, the green concrete has demonstrated excellent performance in terms of cohesiveness, pumpability and workability retention for up to two hours. Laboratory testing, followed by on-site validation, confirmed its suitability for practical construction applications.
