Panaji: Minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday expressed surprise over the below-average utilisation of minority welfare schemes in Goa and called for greater awareness and use of available funds. Interacting with beneficiaries of the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation (NMDFC) at Cavelossim, he said he chose a small, interactive session to understand ground realities and challenges. He said that although Goa is a small state with fewer beneficiaries, welfare schemes can have a significant impact if implemented effectively. Rijiju said he would take up the need for better utilisation and awareness of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram in the state.“Goa is a progressive and aware society. It should take full advantage of the schemes and funds available through the ministry of minority affairs and the NMDFC,” he said.Reiterating the ministry’s commitment to social harmony and inclusive development, Rijiju said India’s strength lies in its multicultural and multi-religious character. “India is a country where minorities are really well taken care of. Goa is a perfect example of harmonious coexistence of different communities, like a mini India,” he said.He also proposed exploring the possibility of organising the ministry’s flagship Lok Samvardhan Parv in Goa, a national event showcasing traditional crafts, textiles, cuisine and entrepreneurship from minority communities across the country.
