COIMBATORE: A three-year-old male elephant calf was translocated from the Wildlife Transit and Treatment Centre (WTTC) in Sirumugai, Coimbatore, to the Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) on Thursday for advanced care and long-term rehabilitation.Based on veterinary advice, the transfer began at 5am to avoid heat and direct sunlight and reduce stress during travel. Forest department officials, staffers and a specialised veterinary medical unit accompanied the calf and monitored its health throughout the journey. The calf reached Kozhikamuthi by 9am and was placed under continuous monitoring and rehabilitation supervised by experienced mahouts, forest staffers and veterinarians. Forest officials said the move prioritised the calf’s health, safety and long-term welfare. The calf was rescued on April 25 after being found separated from its mother and wandering near the Lingapuram forest checkpost in the Sirumugai forest range. It was rehabilitated at WTTC for about two months before being moved to Kozhikamuthi for further care.
