Chennai: Chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday flagged off 300 new buses inducted in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and seven other transport corporations at the Secretariat. He also travelled in one of the new buses to be operated on Perambur route, along with transport minister A Vijay Tamilan Parthiban and officials.The buses were procured at the cost of ₹127.21 crore. Of the 300 buses, 164 will run on diesel, while CNG will fuel the remaining 136. As many as 65 buses will be added to the fleet of MTC, Villupuram corporation will get 36 buses.Transport minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban said that Salem corporation will get an additional 39 buses, while Coimbatore will get 25. Another 25 buses will be added to Coimbatore corporation’s fleet, while 49 buses will be added to Kumbakonam corporation. Madurai and Tirunelveli corporations will get 42 and 44 additional buses, respectively. Currently, 21,527 buses are operated by all eight transport corporations across the state, and 2.05 crore passengers use buses daily.
