Patna: Samastipur divisional railway manager Jyoti Prakash Mishra felicitated loco pilots and assistant loco pilots at a function on Thursday for showing exceptional alertness and humanity in saving at least four lives in separate suicide attempts over the past few weeks in the Samastipur division under East Central Railway (ECR).Mishra praised their swift action and emphasised that humanity must come before duty. Public relations officer R K Singh said the DRM lauded the staff for balancing operational responsibility with humane intervention in critical situations.In one of the latest incidents on June 22, a young woman and a child were spotted lying on the railway track between Salauna and Imli stations. The Samastipur–Saharsa passenger train was approaching at speed when loco pilot Abhay Kumar and assistant loco pilot Jay Prakash Kumar noticed them. Showing remarkable presence of mind, they immediately applied emergency brakes and brought the train to a halt, averting a tragedy.After stopping the train, the crew approached the duo, counselled them against taking such an extreme step and ensured their safety. Both were later sent back home, railway sources said.Earlier, on May 11, a young boy lying on the tracks between Dhang and Riga stations was rescued after loco pilot Pankaj Kumar and assistant loco pilot Shrawan Kumar Sharma halted their train in time. In another incident on May 22, a young woman attempting suicide was saved when loco pilot Manoj Kumar and assistant loco pilot Mani Bhushan Kumar stopped a goods train just short of her.Railway staff not only prevented accidents but also took efforts to counsel the victims and hand them over safely to families or local residents.
