SALEM: An eight-year-old schoolgirl died after she was run over by a van near Ladies Seat in Yercaud on Friday morning.The deceased girl has been identified as Menaka, daughter of Krishnan of Valavanthi. She was a Class III student at Mundagapadi Government School. Police sources said she regularly travelled from her home in a private van up to the Ladies Seat area, where she got down and boarded a bus to reach her school. The van was owned and driven by Ranganathan of Keeraikaadu.On Friday morning, Menaka alighted from the van near Ladies Seat and tried to cross the road in front of the vehicle. Driver Ranganathan moved the van without noticing her. “The vehicle’s wheel ran over the child,” said an officer at the Yercaud police station.She was rushed to the Government Hospital in Yercaud, where doctors examined and declared her dead on arrival.The Yercaud police registered a case and began investigations.
