Berhampur: Amid the day temperature of 38°C in silk city, one may spot an elderly man cycling comfortably on roads. But how?Meet S Laxman Reddy of Lanjipalli, who has developed a lightweight and multipurpose temporary roof on top of his bicycle, all for a sum of Rs 3,000. The health volunteer used steel roads, thin tin plate, thermocol sheet and clothes. “This contraption protects from rain too, with the help of side screens made out of discarded flexi boards. Its roof can be flattened to be used as a bed to take rest on long rides. Now, I cycle comfortably even in high day temperatures,” Reddy said.He elaborated on his contraption: “I took only four to five hours to fix it after welding and fitting screws in a garage. The materials cost Rs 3,000. Before cycling, I sprinkle water on the roof, which gives a cool feel and reduces the heat effect.”Reddy worked as a mobile tea-seller in City Hospital area from 2016 to 2022. Covering his face with cloth did not give the cyclist any relief in the scorching heat, hence the urge to innovate. Though he designed it two months ago, he couldn’t complete it due to paucity of funds.Reddy’s innovation has become the topic of discussion among silk city residents. While peddling in the city, several people ask Reddy details and cost of his innovation.
