T’puram: Shocking details have emerged in the murder of a one-and-a-half-year-old child in Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, with the postmortem report revealing the extent of the brutal abuse allegedly inflicted on the toddler. According to the postmortem report, the child had 91 injuries across his body, including a fractured rib, and died due to severe trauma and internal bleeding caused by injuries to head and chest. Investigators said the findings have strengthened the case filed against the stepfather, Ashkar, who is facing charges of murder and cruelty against a child. The postmortem report has also raised questions regarding a fractured arm sustained by the child earlier. The child’s mother, Akhila, and Ashkar had claimed that the injury occurred when the toddler fell from a staircase. However, police suspect foul play and are examining the circumstances surrounding the injury. Police said charges of abetment are likely to be invoked against Akhila. During interrogation, Ashkar reportedly told investigators that the child was an obstacle to his relationship with Akhila and their plans to live together. Police also maintain that Akhila was aware of the abuse allegedly being inflicted on the child. Meanwhile, investigators have widened the probe to examine Ashkar’s past and allegations connected to his marital relationship. Family members of Ashkar’s first wife, Amina, recently alleged that he had brutally assaulted her, causing severe head injuries that left her bedridden. She is currently undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at the medical college hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. Investigators are also looking into suspicions surrounding the alleged drowning death of Amina’s brother and the death of another woman who had previously been engaged to Ashkar. Police are expected to seek custody of the accused for further questioning as the investigation continues to uncover details surrounding the toddler’s death.
