Assam has become the first Northeastern state to pass a Bill aimed at creating a Uniform Civil Code framework. The proposed law seeks common civil rules across communities in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession and live-in relationships. The Bill includes provisions like a ban on polygamy, mandatory registration of marriages and live-in relationships, and greater uniformity in succession laws, while exempting Scheduled Tribes from its ambit. The move by the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has triggered intense political, legal and social debate across the country.
