Assam has become the first Northeastern state to pass a Bill aimed at creating a Uniform Civil Code framework. The proposed law seeks common civil rules across communities in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession and live-in relationships. The Bill includes provisions like a ban on polygamy, mandatory registration of marriages and live-in relationships, and greater uniformity in succession laws, while exempting Scheduled Tribes from its ambit.
