Yamunanagar: An exclusive district court in Jagadhri, dedicated to heinous crimes against women, has sentenced a 36-year-old woman to rigorous life imprisonment for murdering her three-year-old daughter at a hotel in Amritsar in 2022.The convict, Maninder Kaur alias Simmy, a resident of Yamunanagar, had allegedly conspired with her lover to eliminate her children, whom they viewed as obstacles to their relationship. Additional sessions judge Sukhda Pritam also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Kaur, failing to pay which will lead to an additional six months of imprisonment. The case was registered on Aug 10, 2022, on a complaint by the woman’s husband, Kulwinder Singh. During the investigation, Kaur confessed that she had been in a long-term relationship with a man identified as Amit from Ambala since 2007. Despite her marriage in 2012, she remained in contact with him, which led to frequent arguments with her husband. Eventually, she and Amit allegedly planned to kill her two children—an eight-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter—so they could be together. On Aug 9, 2022, Kaur took both children to Amritsar without informing her family. After checking into a hotel, she strangled her daughter, Divjot Kaur, with a dupatta, police said. She then wrapped the body in a bedsheet and abandoned it outside a nearby gurdwara before returning to the hotel to act as if nothing had happened. Kaur admitted to police that she also intended to kill her son, but police traced and arrested her before she could do so. The prosecution supported its case with travel details, hotel records, and Kaur’s own disclosure statements.
