Mysuru: In a major relief to students and staff at University of Mysore’s Manasagangotri campus, the university canteen that remained shut for the past eight months is all set to reopen in the coming weeks sporting a greener and more attractive look.University registrar MK Savitha said the administration was taking all necessary steps to restart the canteen at the earliest, bringing cheer to thousands of students, teaching faculty and non-teaching staff who have been missing the popular gathering spot. The facility, which is popularly known as ‘Round Canteen’, going by its structural design, is 50 years old and has long been considered the heart of the sprawling Manasagangotri campus. Apart from serving food and refreshments, the canteen has been a favourite hangout for students during leisure hours, and a hotsopt for group discussions and academic interactions.Closure of the canteen had caused considerable inconvenience, as students struggled to find affordable breakfast and lunch options within the campus. Many were forced to walk long distances in search of outlets.Speaking to TOI, Savitha said the tender for operating the canteen was complete, but the contractor was yet to commence operations.“If necessary, we will call for re-tendering and ensure the canteen is reopened without further delay. Along with restarting the canteen, we are also planning to develop more greenery around the premises with the help of the horticulture department, so that the area remains lush and attractive throughout the year,” she added.“Round Canteen is not just a food spot, it has an emotional connect with students in Manasagangotri. Campus life feels incomplete without it,” said Keerthana, a postgraduate student. Another student, Harish Kumar, agreed, saying: “We spent some of our best memories there. Its reopening will bring life back to the campus.”
