Bhubaneswar: Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) on Friday clarified that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in Odisha and the overall fuel supply situation across the state remains normal and stable. The clarification came amid growing concern and apprehension among people about a possible price hike in fuel and short supply, as some districts on Thursday reported early closure of the filling stations.According to OMC officials, a sudden and unexpected surge in demand for petrol and diesel was witnessed during the first few days of the month in some border districts of the state, leading to short-term stock depletion at select outlets. However, coordinated measures were initiated to replenish supplies without delay. “To ensure uninterrupted fuel availability, additional tank trucks have been deployed for faster replenishment of stocks at affected depots and retail outlets,” an OMC statement reads. It stated that inventory levels are being monitored in real time and priority supplies are being ensured for outlets reporting lower stocks. Officials attributed the reason for stock depletion to vehicles from neighbouring states filling their tanks in panic. The OMCs also advised industrial and bulk consumers to procure fuel directly from oil companies instead of retail outlets, reiterating that fuel stations are not authorised to sell petroleum products in bulk.Officials said the step will help maintain smooth supply for regular consumers. Meanwhile, residents said panic triggered by rumours led to unnecessary crowding at fuel stations in some areas.“I saw long queues near a petrol pump in my locality early this week, but today everything seems normal. Fuel is available without any waiting. There are unnecessary rumours and talks about the shortage,” said Ramesh Nayak, a resident of Nayapalli.Echoing similar views, Bishnu Nagar resident Namita Mishra said people rushed to petrol pumps after hearing shortage reports on social media. “The staff told us supply is regular and there is no need to panic,” she asserted.
