Berhampur: Two teenagers were detained by police on Wednesday for allegedly hacking a 21-year-old pregnant woman to death in front of her two-year-old daughter at a village under Ganjam district’s Hinjili police limits on Tuesday.Leader of opposition Naveen Patnaik urged chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi to ensure immediate arrest of all accused. The incident took place when the woman along with her daughter was staging a dharna outside her estranged husband’s house, protesting his alleged abandonment.“We have detained two persons, including the 17-year-old brother-in-law of the deceased. The other, a 16-year-old, was present at the crime scene,” said Srinibash Sethi, IIC of Hinjili police station. He said the axe used in the murder has been seized. Police said the husband was not at home when the incident took place.Expressing anguish over the crime in his home constituency, Naveen said the victim was holding her child while seeking justice when she was attacked. “The visual of a young child crying beside her mother’s body has shocked the conscience of Odisha,” he said in a letter to the chief minister, urging immediate arrests. He also demanded state care, compensation and rehabilitation for the child.Police said the body has been kept in the mortuary after postmortem, as the woman’s relatives were unwilling to take it for cremation. The child has been shifted to a childcare home on the direction of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).According to police, the woman had lodged an FIR on April 19 at Hinjili police station, following which notices were issued to her in-laws.
