He sustained critical injuries in the firing and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead, they added. According to preliminary information, Rath was shot at from a close range by miscreants, who fled the scene immediately after carrying out the attack.

Earlier on Tuesday, four security personnel, including Nazat Police Station OC and two CRPF personnel, were injured in violence in Sandeshkhali’s Nazat. After the announcement of results on Monday, cases of threat and intimidation have been reported, with 200 FIRs being registered and 433 persons arrested, West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta said.
Two deaths were reported in connection with the post-poll violence — one in Nanoor and another in Newtown, Gupta confirmed. Since Wednesday morning, there have been no incidents of violence, he said.

“Four arrests were made on Tuesday night and on Wednesday more arrests were made. In Nazat area, OC received information that some people assembled and were about to attack people from some other community. He received fire-arm injuries. Five persons, including two cops and two CRPF personnel, were injured,” Gupta said.
