Canacona: The Loliem-Polem gram sabha, on Sunday, unanimously opposed the construction of multi-dwelling units such as residential complexes, commercial blocks, hotels and other large projects. Villagers raised objections in view of an application received by the panchayat from a Mapusa-based real estate company asking for a licence to construct 36 villas and a swimming pool behind the S S Angle higher secondary school at Dapot. The gram sabha asked the panchayat to write to the deputy town planner as well as the district deputy collector, to implement the resolution. Villagers said the panchayat should also see that their demand is enforced, and if necessary, approach the highest court, to stop mega projects in the village.Several villagers requested the panchayat to see that all rivulets are desilted before the monsoons, to prevent silt depositing in paddy fields. Besides, all other pre-monsoon works such as cleaning of drainages, gutters are done in time to avoid water logging. There was also a discussion about a dog shelter, with some requesting the panchayat to identify a land for the same. Sarpanch Nisha Chari said it was not feasible to set-up a dog shelter at this juncture even if someone donated land. The panchayat, she said, neither has manpower nor finance, to run the dog shelter. The panchayat has written to the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services but has not received a response, she said. The annual budget was proposed and passed at the gram sabha.
