Tata Steel on Friday said it has challenged a demand notice of over ₹1,755 crore raised by the Jharkhand mining authorities, alleging excess extraction of coal from its West Bokaro Colliery more than a decade ago.
“The Management believes that the demand lacks justification and a substantive basis,” Tata Steel said in its exchange filing.
In a regulatory filing, the company said it has filed a revision application before the revisional authority under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, contesting the demand issued by the District Mining Officer (DMO), Ramgarh.
The demand notice, dated March 30, 2026, seeks an aggregate amount of ₹1,755.10 crore, alleging excess extraction of around 16.24 crore tonnes of mineral coal beyond permissible limits during the period between FY2000-01 and FY2006-07.
The notice is based on principles laid down by the Supreme Court in the Common Cause vs Union of India case related to illegal mining.
Tata Steel said the management believes the demand “lacks justification and substantive basis” and has accordingly challenged the notice through a revision application filed on April 24, 2026.
The company has named the State of Jharkhand and the District Mining Officer, Ramgarh, as respondents in the matter. The revision petition is currently pending before the coal ministry’s revisional authority in New Delhi.
