Ara: Veer Kunwar Singh Vijayotsav, commemorating the historic and decisive victory of Veer Kunwar Singh’s forces over the British army led by Captain Le Grand on April 23, 1858, was celebrated in a grand manner at the birthplace of the freedom fighter in Jagdishpur in Bhojpur district at the historic Veer Kunwar Singh fort grounds on Thursday.Bhojpur DM Tanai Sultania, SP Raj and several public representatives ceremonially hoisted the national flag at the Kunwar Singh fort grounds in Jagdishpur. Following the flag hoisting, they paid floral tributes at the statue of the freedom fighter, honouring his contribution to India’s independence struggle.Speaking on the occasion, the DM said, “Today the nation remembers the unparalleled courage, patriotism and Supreme sacrifice of Babu Veer Kunwar Singh and we all pledge to uphold his ideals.”Jagdishpur MLA Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha, former MLA Ram Bishun Singh Lohia, Jagdishpur SDPO Rajesh Kumar Sharma, Jagdishpur SDM Sanjit Kumar and several other dignitaries paid tributes to the freedom fighter, who defeated the East India Company’s troops led by Captain Le Grand in a decisive battle fought near Jagdishpur on April 23, 1858.Recalling the valour shown by Veer Kunwar Singh, one of the speakers said, “Despite being 80-year-old and even after amputating his own left hand which had sustained grievous injuries during the battle, Veer Kunwar Singh fought valiantly and got decisive triumph over the British army. Having gained victory over the British troops, Kunwar Singh had hoisted the flag at the Jagdishpur fort marking a grand victory of the 1857 freedom fighters over the mighty British army.”At another official ceremony held at Veer Kunwar Singh park in Ara, the DM and the SP garlanded the statue of Veer Kunwar Singh and hoisted the national flag marking the Vijayotsav.
