Nagpur: A women’s gang operating through e-rickshaws to target elderly women in broad daylight was busted in the city this week. The gang was arrested for robbing a gold necklace from an 83-year-old woman in Imamwada area earlier this month. The incident occurred on April 6, when an e-rickshaw driver offered the elderly victim a ride to Rameshwari. Two women were already seated inside. When the complainant realised the driver was taking a different route and protested, the vehicle stopped near a school within the limits of Imambada police station. As she alighted, one of the women forcibly snatched her gold necklace containing 29 beads, valued at Rs10,000.Acting on the elderly woman’s complaint, the personnel of the anti-gold chain theft squad under assistant PI Mangala Harde launched a parallel technical investigation.Based on intel and technical leads, the team identified and trapped the accused. The arrested women were identified as Krishna Jatav, 24, Shivani Jatav, 22, both residents of Jat Tarodi, and Katrina Thomas, 22, of Indira Mata Nagar. During interrogation, all three confessed to committing the robbery. The e-rickshaw used in the crime has been seized.Police sources indicate that such women’s gangs are increasingly using e-rickshaws as a modus operandi to gain the trust of senior citizens, especially women, before striking.
