Surat: The Katargam police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old construction worker for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl at the site of a govt school, taking advantage of her parents’ abscence. The alleged crime was perpetrated on Wednesday noon when the girl’s father went shopping for clothes in the Amroli market. The accused Ali Anjar Alam was booked under sections of BNS and POCSO.According to details, the girl’s family lived at the construction site’s makeshift dwellings with his wife, two sons aged 13 and 11 years, and two daughters aged 8 and 6 years. Being a holiday, he went to buy clothes taking along his wife and younger daughter. He told a relative, who also worked there, to take care of his three kids.When the couple returned around 6.30pm, the accused complained to the girl’s father that his younger son was very mischievous and harassed him. However, the son denied doing anything and told his father that Alam had raped his sister. While the accused denied, the girl told her father about the sexual assault. However, women working at the site checked the girl and noticed internal injuries. She was taken to the hospital. The girl’s father approached the police and Alam was arrested.Both the victim and the accused are natives of West Bengal and came to Surat as contract labourers.
