Bhubaneswar: The family of a 73-year-old woman has donated her liver after she was declared brain-dead, helping save the life of a 50-year-old man suffering from end-stage liver failure at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.Urmila Harichandan, a native of Khurda district, was admitted to the hospital on March 7 following a stroke, after which the medical team treating her confirmed that she suffered brain death. Despite receiving this tragic news, her family showed selflessness by consenting to organ donation, as a result, her liver was retrieved on March 8 and transplanted into a suitable patient, said the hospital sources here on Sunday. The organ donation coordinators at the hospital praised the family’s prompt and compassionate response, stating that such generous acts are crucial in addressing the severe shortage of donor organs in the region.“The family’s decision to transform their personal grief into hope for another person is truly inspiring. This single act possibly saved a life and highlights the importance of organ donation awareness,” said a senior doctor associated with the procedure.
