Kolkata: An elderly man was seriously injured in an alleged road rage incident outside Alipore zoo in Kolkata on Monday evening, after a confrontation between a biker and a car occupant turned violent, police said.The injured man, Nirmal Kumar Dewan (70), suffered a head injury and was admitted to hospital, where he remains under treatment. Police arrested the accused biker, Akash Lavetti, on Tuesday based on a complaint by the victim’s son.According to cops, the incident took place in front of the zoo-National Library intersection in the Alipore police station area. Investigators said Lavetti was waiting at the traffic signal on his motorcycle on Monday afternoon. When the signal turned green, he moved ahead. At that point, a car approaching from the same direction but on a separate flank allegedly hit the bike.Police said Lavetti then stopped the car, triggering an argument between the two sides. Dewan, his wife and their son were inside the car, which was being driven by the victim’s son. Investigators said no one initially stepped out of the vehicle. The biker allegedly asked the occupants to roll down the window.When the window was lowered, Lavetti allegedly began abusing the family and broke the car’s side mirror, police said. Dewan then got out of the car to protest which led to a further escalation of the dispute.Police said the biker accused the family of damaging his motorcycle. Investigators said the car had struck the bike and then reversed, causing parts of the motorcycle to break. During the argument, Lavetti allegedly pushed Dewan with force.The impact caused the 70-year-old to fall on the road and hit the back of his head, police said. He suffered severe injuries, and blood clotting was later detected in his brain. Lavetti allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.Dewan was taken to hospital by his son. Police said his condition was serious when he was admitted.Following a complaint lodged by Dewan’s son at Alipore police station, officers registered a case of attempted culpable homicide. Using the registration number of the motorcycle, police traced Lavetti and arrested him during the night.
