Kanpur: Even 36 hours after a woman allegedly threw her five-year-old daughter into the Yamuna river from Marka–Asothar bridge under Marka police station of Banda, the child was yet to be traced, police said. Officials said since Sunday morning, an 11-member SDRF team along with local divers has been conducting an intensive search operation. Nets and hooks were used to scan nearly three kilometres of the river, but the child’s body could not be recovered. Police said the strong current of the river was affecting the search operation.According to police, a 25-year-old woman of Usara village, was staying at her maternal house for the past five years. On Friday afternoon, she allegedly had an argument with her mother and left the house with her daughter Pinki on the pretext of getting her hair cut. Police said she reached Marka–Asothar bridge and threw the child into the river.Police said the woman also attempted to jump into the river and used a passerby’s phones to inform her mother about her intention to commit suicide. But people present at the spot intervened, caught hold of the woman and informed the police. A police team reached the spot, took her into custody and began a search operation with the help of divers. Marka Police Station in-charge Mithilesh Singh said an FIR has been lodged against the woman on the complaint of the child’s father and her interrogation is underway.Officials said the search operation would continue on Tuesday and surveillance along the riverbanks has been intensified.
