Varanasi: Maharajganj police in Azamgarh district arrested three accused involved in cow slaughtering and cattle smuggling after an exchange of fire, where two suspects were injured in the leg. The police recovered country-made pistols, cartridges, mobile phones and a motorcycle from the accused.Azamgarh Assistant Superintendent of Police (Rural) Chirag Jain reported that Maharajganj police received a tip-off about suspicious activity around 2:40 am. During a raid near Ahrigaon village, police found armed suspects who opened fire. In the exchange, two suspects — Abu Zaid (23) and Anil Nona (21) — were injured and caught, while Abdulla (19) was also arrested on the spot.The suspects revealed that they and their gang would steal cattle at night, slaughter them, and sell the meat for profit. They would dispose of the remains in rivers, drains, or bury them to cover their tracks. The gang kept changing locations to avoid detection.
