Varanasi: Under the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme launched by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation for property tax, water tax and sewer tax defaulters, 276 building owners have deposited ₹39.36 lakh in property tax within the first three days. Taxpayers have also received a waiver of ₹7.18 lakh on interest and surcharge.Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said that under the scheme, the entire interest and surcharge are being waived if the principal outstanding amount is paid in one go. The scheme began on Aug 15 and will remain effective until Dec 15.Following govt directions, the corporation has also approved an instalment payment facility for small and medium taxpayers. Defaulters with dues of up to ₹1 lakh can deposit one-third of the outstanding amount within the first 30 days. The remaining two-thirds can be paid in two equal monthly instalments.The arrangement is expected to provide financial relief to citizens and speed up the tax collection process.
