Chennai: The state health department will soon issue appointment orders for 250 specialists in five specialties—radiology, gynaecology, forensic medicine, geriatrics and cardiothoracic surgery—besides 1,100 doctors for various primary health centres and secondary hospitals, health minister Ma Subramanian said on Saturday.The medical recruitment board received more than 25,000 applications for the 1,100 vacancies in various govt facilities. Tests were conducted, and the list of qualified candidates will be released by the board soon, he said.Although the usual process is to post service candidates in various specialty posts after they complete postgraduation, the state appointed 182 gynaecologists, 37 radiologists, 24 forensic medicine experts, six geriatricians and a cardiothoracic surgeon directly to fill vacancies, he said, after distributing orders to 115 medical officers, 83 ophthalmic assistants (75 to public health), and 75 lab technicians.The state filled more than 30% of vacancies in the last five years, he said.
