Gandhinagar: Counting began on Wednesday for elections announced for 8,326 gram panchayats in the state. Term-end elections were held in 4,564 gram panchayats, and byelections were conducted in 3,524 gram panchayats.Until 8pm on Wednesday, in the member category, 10,292 seats were declared, 22,506 seats were won uncontested, results for 5,395 seats were pending, and 4,877 seats were empty, meaning that nominations were not filed for these seats. For the sarpanch category, of the total 4,564 seats, 2,425 were declared on Wednesday, 1,075 were uncontested, 1,025 were pending, and 39 were empty.Gram panchayats within the limits of the Visavadar and Kadi assembly constituencies did not go to polls, and elections for villages under these constituencies will be held at a later stage.Counting was conducted at 239 centres. A total of 13,444 personnel were involved in counting duties, while 14,231 police officers were posted for security during counting. Repolling took place on Tuesday at three polling stations in Vadodara, Sabarkantha, and Dahod districts. The gram panchayat elections are not contested on symbols of political parties.
