Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Thursday evening arrested two suspects for Wednesday’s grenade blast outside the Punjab BJP HQ in Chandigarh. They were identified as Aman Singh alias Bholu and Gurtej Singh of Rattangarh village in Rupnagar district.No other information on them was available at the time of filing this report. The separatist group Babbar Khalsa had claimed responsibility for the attack but police are yet to confirm it.Initial police investigation has revealed that the Chinese-made P-86 hand grenade used in the blast was smuggled from Pakistan via a drone. Police officers see this blast as part of a series of grenade attacks on police stations in Punjab.Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said multiple teams of crime branch, Operation Cell and District Crime Cell are working the case and raids were conducted in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal.The grenade was hurled from a distance of 25-30 feet and landed near the main gate of the BJP office. There’s a cabin for two CRPF sentries near the gate and more personnel were on duty nearby. Luckily, no one was injured.The spot where the grenade landed was where visitors often park vehicles. The splinters damaged a parked car and a scooter.After lobbing the grenade, the two suspects ran towards Sector 24 road, where they had parked a scooter and sped away, say police. The boundary wall of the BJP office is just 3 feet high with a 2-ft-high grill on top.Police suspect the attackers arrived from Sector 36. After parking their scooter, they approached the BJP office on foot. There’s footage of them waiting for the precise time to attack. As seen in a self-filmed video, one of them pulled the pin and lobbed the grenade. A blast was heard as the two ran away.After crossing the road between Sectors 37 and 24, they were seen sprinting towards the VIP area, where several judges reside. After this, they are suspected to have gone from Sector 37-38 road to Mohali via New Chandigarh.
