Bhilwara: Police in Chittorgarh district Monday arrested 17 Kashmiri students of Mewar University after they allegedly attempted self-immolation during a protest over recognition for the BSc Nursing course.Students from Rajasthan and Kashmir have been sitting on a dharna since Feb 17, alleging the university does not have recognition for BSc Nursing course.On Monday, protesters staged a demonstration and did not allow faculty to enter classrooms. Gangrar police personnel and ASP Bhagwat Singh Hingad reached the campus and tried to reason with the students.Police said 17 Kashmiri students allegedly brought petrol in plastic bottles and began sprinkling it on their bodies. Officers stopped them and brought the situation under control.Based on a report by Gangrar police station officer Shyam Ram, police registered a case against the 17 students on charges including obstruction of govt work and attempted self-immolation. Chittorgarh SP Manish Tripathi said, “Classes had resumed at the university campus from Monday, and in view of the students’ protest, police had already deployed additional force outside and inside the university.”
